Visual Identity for Public Space
Chatterbox Jazz Club
A Vibrant and Fresh Look with a Nostalgic Ode to Indy’s Historic Jazz Scene
Project Category: Public Space Design
Spring 2025
Softwares: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Figma
The challenge:
The aim of this project was to develop a concept/brand identity design for any local public space of our choosing and develop a logo and branding collateral for the space of choice. My goal was to create a bold and artistic brand identity for the historic jazz club named ‘Chatterbox’ in downtown Indianapolis. I wanted the theme to revolve around a hypothetical summer jazz festival that Chatterbox is sponsoring that would take place in Holliday Park. I wanted this brand to highlight the vibrant, colorful, and harmonious essence of jazz music, capture the historical significance of jazz in Indy, and bring a modern and funky twist to the marketing collateral.
Color Palette
Bold, bright, vibrant, neon, funky
Color Usage:
I wanted to use vibrant and funky colors for this project, and especially since it was a jazz club, I found that the choice of neon colors would help capture a captivating and entertaining nightlife, full of luminescent, moody lighting and good music.
Using this color palette was very helpful for the illustrations made as well. I wanted to represent the colorful stage lights seen during performances, and almost abstractly capture the highlights of the stage lights bouncing off of their face.

My Thoughts:
I thoroughly enjoyed getting to choose a space that was related to jazz and bright, vibrant nightlife because there was a plethora of style directions to go down. While there were infinite possibilities of how I could take the project, I was a bit overwhelmed at first and struggled to narrow down for a long time what route I really wanted to go down. After I had the idea to do fun illustrations of key historical figures that played in Indy, suddenly my idea felt like it was coming to life. I enjoyed the meticulous process of overlaying colorful shapes that framed the characters and thought it brought a unique and innovative feel to the brand. Overall, this project also taught me the importance of balance, staying true to the grid system when in doubt, the importance of experimentation, and how much of a difference a good typeface can have.
